Help for Adam Spicar's Parents After Flooding

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

I reach out to you in a time of dire need, hoping to gather your support for a cause very close to my heart. Last weekend, my parents' lives were turned upside down by the catastrophic flooding that swept through the Czech Republic. Their home, which has been our family's sanctuary for decades, now stands in an area declared a disaster zone. My parents live in a small town Holcovice which is located nearby Jeseniky, Krnov and Opava areas.

The Situation:

  • No Electricity: The power grid has been destroyed, and electricity is not expected to be restored for another 4-6 weeks. They're relying on a gasoline generator for basic needs to power cooking tops and to boil water. They are sharing the generator with neighbors as well.
  • No Road Access: The floods have washed away roads, isolating them from immediate help and supplies.
  • Heating Crisis: With the gas pipes damaged, there's no heating, and with the approaching cold, this becomes a critical issue.

I've started this to raise funds for:

  • Gasoline: To keep their generator running, providing them with the basic necessity of electricity.
  • Emergency Supplies: Food, clean water, gasoline (to power generator), disinfecting soaps and wipes, laundry detergent, blankets, and other essentials to help them through this challenging period.
  • Repair and Recovery: Funds will also go towards repairing their home once the waters recede.

Every donation, no matter the size, will directly contribute to helping my parents survive this ordeal and start rebuilding their lives. Your generosity can provide not just financial support but also hope and warmth in these cold, dark times.

How You Can Help:

  • Donate: Even a small amount can make a big difference.
  • Share: Please share this campaign with your network. The more people who know, the more help we can gather.
  • Support: Messages of support can also lift their spirits during this tough time.

I've always believed in the kindness of our community, and now, more than ever, I am counting on that kindness. My parents have given so much love and support to others over the years; it's heartbreaking to see them in this situation.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for any help you can provide. Let's show them that even in the darkest times, they are not alone.

With deepest gratitude,

Adam & Lucie Spicar

From the news:

Landslides triggered by September floods threaten parts of Holčovice in the Bruntál region. A structural engineer has inspected all affected areas and will recommend further actions to the local authorities, according to Mayor Martin Hradil (For the Development of Holčovice). The municipality was impacted by flooding in two-thirds of its territory, damaging roads, bridges, and a gas pipeline. Three houses are designated for demolition. The operator of a former 17th-century inn, Milan Adámek, reports damages exceeding one million crowns. He urgently needs to dry out the building but has not yet found a dehumidifier.

Landslides began to appear in Holčovice after the water receded. Some reached residential properties but did not cause destruction. “The soil piled up against the house, but it did not penetrate the structure. Fortunately, it didn’t damage it,” the mayor stated. Landslides have been observed in about eight locations within Holčovice’s cadastral area. All have been inspected by the engineer, who will prepare reports and suggest next steps. Preliminary assessments indicate that some landslides are harmless, while others may pose problems.

The floods caused the most damage to the gas pipeline, roads, and bridges in the village. Residents will be without gas for several weeks, as repairs must first be made to the gas pipeline in nearby Hynčice. According to the mayor, repairs in Holčovice will cost around 3.5 million crowns. There is also a current issue with drinking water; while there is no water supply, locals rely on wells that are contaminated and need to be cleaned.

The floods also inundated the building of the former 17th-century inn, where owner Milan Adámek offers accommodation. He has yet to fully recover from a decline in clients during the COVID-19 pandemic, and now faces another setback due to the flooding. “We were in the middle of the current. There was about a meter of water in the ground floor,” he said. The flood destroyed nearly all furnishings, floors, and furniture. “The damage to the building is around a million. I haven’t yet addressed the damage to the furnishings,” Adámek told ČTK.

He added that he had to rip out all the floors, which will need to be redone. “Right now, we primarily need to dry out the building. We don’t have any dehumidifiers. At least two would be helpful,” he said.

Holčovice was also severely affected by floods in 1997, which devastated three bridges, eleven footbridges, and several family homes, some of which had to be demolished.
