Shibero Trust: Kenya's Youth Depression Crisis

Imagine being a young person in Kenya, navigating the challenges of adolescence while silently battling the darkness within. The feelings are overwhelming, the thoughts relentless, and the future seems bleak. In a society where mental health struggles are often stigmatized and misunderstood, these young people feel isolated and alone. They may withdraw from friends and family, struggle in school, or turn to unhealthy coping mechanisms. A staggering 26.9% of adolescents struggle with depression, a silent crisis that threatens their potential and well-being.

This is a devastating reality for far too many Kenyan children, and adolescents, resulting in many Kenyan youth who aren't coping with the challenges of life.

But there is hope. Shibero Psychosocial Health Trust (SPHT) is here to change the narrative. Our innovative African Mental Health First Aid (AMHFA) program is a lifeline, empowering educators and caregivers with the knowledge and skills to:

Recognize the early warning signs of mental distress in children and adolescents.
Understand mental health through a culturally relevant lens.
Respond with compassion, support, and appropriate interventions.

By investing in this program, your donation will help us:

Transform 21,000 lives: We'll train 1200 teachers and caregivers, who will then carry this into their personal depression experiences, then apply their new learning and depression education to their own families, reaching a network of 21,000, children, adolescents and youth in the communities.
Break the silence: We'll create safe spaces for open conversations about mental health, dismantling the stigma that's so prevalent and harmful, and fostering understanding by breaking the myths and taboos in families.
Build resilience: We'll equip both adults and young people with coping skills and strategies to manage their mental well-being.
Empower communities: We'll create a network of support, ensuring that no young person feels alone in their struggles.
