Cory Groeneveld is 36 years old, husband to Hannah, and father of 5 children, Ethan (12), Ava (10), Moriah (7), Jordy (3), and their youngest, Theo (16 months) born right at the peak of this story...
Many people may remember when Cory was on dialysis from 2015-2017. His transplant kidney that he received as a teenager failed the week before Hannah was due with their second baby, Ava. The community came together then, to support this young family with a benefit. They will always and forever be grateful for the love and support their little family received. He received his second kidney transplant in January of 2017 and has had next to no health issues since. But, around Christmas time of 2023, Cory started experiencing back pain with intermittent GI symptoms that escalated to repeated hospital stays, multiple misdiagnosis, and eventually an exploratory surgery that resulted in finding something no one expected. Cancer. Hannah was 36 weeks pregnant with their youngest, Theo, and she and Cory once again found themselves navigating serious health issues, this time Stage 4 Colon Cancer.
In April of last year, Cory began chemotherapy, with the hope of shrinking the tumors found and making surgery possible; and in November of last year, he had CRS - Cytoreductive surgery - aka debulking surgery. He resumed maintenance chemo and everyone was under the impression Cory was cancer free & scans were clear.
However, once again, this summer, Cory began experiencing those same symptoms that lead to his diagnosis last year. And after repeated scans, blood work, and no clear answers, his surgeons decided to do another exploratory procedure and once again, found cancer exactly where they found it last March. This was a blow to everyone, his surgical oncologist as well.
Thankfully, everyone is still very optimistic. They were told “we are not at a tipping point”. Cory once again has started harsher chemo, in hopes of shrinking tumors to make him operable again. This time, the plan would be to do the CRS again, but with the addition of HIPEC - a heated chemo “wash”. This has been shown to dramatically extend, if not “cure” stage 4. His surgical team believes that would be the case for Cory. And Hannah & Cory are hoping & praying for that.
With all of this, Cory had JUST started back to work a few months ago, and once again has had to stop working to focus on fighting cancer. Now everything surrounding finances, jobs, insurance, the never ending medical bills…is unknown yet again.
Hannah had to quit her full time in home daycare job last spring to become a full time caregiver to not only their 5 kids but also Cory. With his health so unpredictable, there’s no way she can pick up a job outside the home. She tries to make some money here and there selling things & making Mustard Seed jewelry - but at this time, neither Hannah or Cory have any income coming in.
Life has flipped upside down yet again, and they were just starting to catch their breath from the trauma of this last year. Their faith, family, friends, and their wonderful community truly have carried them this far and they’re trusting in God to continue to take care of them through this unimaginable diagnosis and journey.
They try to keep things as normal and positive for their kids and truly believe in the power of prayer. God is so good. Please pray for a miracle for this family.
If you feel called to donate, please know that you’re helping to keep the roof over their 7 heads. You’re helping to put gas in their 2013 rusty suburban. You’re helping to keep the lights on. You’re helping them buy one of their growing children a new pair of shoes, a jacket, or a pair of snow pants. Know that you might even be helping them chip away at the insurmountable medical bills that flood their mailbox daily. Know that your generosity is so humbly appreciated. Know that you are being prayed for each night when they bring their kiddos into their messy, lived in living room and say prayers together.
Hannah & Cory just want their children to know they’re going to be okay. That daddy can focus on getting better…so he can do all the things he loves to do with them & be able to make many, many more memories with them.
If you’re unable to donate, please share & most importantly please pray.
Thank you so much for supporting Cory & Hannah, Ethan, Ava, Moriah, Jordy, & Theo - as they all tackle cancer together yet again.
