The Arlington Latin Mass Society needs your help!

The Traditional Latin Mass is in danger of cancellation. In the fall of 2022, in the wake of Traditionis custodes and at the direction of Rome, the Diocese of Arlington and Archdiocese of Washington implemented harsh restrictions on access to the TLM and the traditional forms of the Sacraments. The Arlington Latin Mass Society (ALMS) came together to respond to these restrictions with prayer and action.

With your support, we will do everything in our power to keep the flame of Tradition alive in the Arlington and Washington dioceses. Here is a sampling of what we've done so far, and what we plan to continue doing in the year to come:

Good Friday TLM Shuttle Buses

Since Arlington and Washington's restrictions both forbid the celebration of the TLM during Holy Week, including the Sacred Triduum, it has become necessary for the faithful attached to the traditional rites to travel to other dioceses for these most holy days. In order to enable as many people as possible to attend the traditional Good Friday liturgy, in 2023 ALMS began chartering buses to the National Shrine of St. Alphonsus Liguori in Baltimore, Md., and St. Joseph Church in Richmond, Va., both administered by the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter — and dozens of faithful took us up on the offer. We will do so again in 2024, and intend to continue each year as long as the traditional Holy Week liturgies are unavailable in Arlington and Washington.

The DC Rosary Rally & National Summorum Pontificum Pilgrimages

Since June 2022, when the restrictions were first announced, ALMS has been organizing weekly Rosary Rallies in Washington, DC, outside the Apostolic Nunciature. We have also organized three walking pilgrimages from the Arlington cathedral of St. Thomas More to the Washington cathedral of St. Matthew, praying for the end of the restrictions and the restoration of the TLM to its former liberty under Summorum Pontificum.

ALMS Speaker Series

Each month, we host lectures by respected clergy and lay experts on topics related to traditional Catholic liturgy and life. Speakers so far have included:

Fr. Leo Camurati, O.P., on the history and spirituality of the Dominican Rite
Fr. Richard Nichols, S.J., on the history of the Jesuits and the Latin Mass
Sr. Deirdre "Dede" Byrne, P.O.S.C., on the occasion of the anniversary of the weekly DC Rosary Rally
Dr. Peter Kwasniewski on "Liturgical Obedience, the Imitation of Christ, and the Seductions of Autonomy"
Vatican correspondent Ed Pentin on "The Synod on Synodality: New Springtime or Pandora's Box?"

These lectures are free and open to the public, and most are recorded and published on our YouTube channel.

Liturgies for Special Occasions

On special occasions, we have sponsored liturgies at various parishes in the Diocese of Arlington. So far, this has included:

In June 2023, Solemn First Vespers for the Feast of Corpus Christi at St. Louis in Alexandria – the first celebration of the traditional Roman Office at the parish since Vatican II.
In August 2023, a Votive Sung Mass of St. Dominic in the Dominican Rite at St. John the Beloved in McLean, following Fr. Camurati's Speaker Series lecture about that rite.
Also in August 2023, Solemn Vespers for the Patronal Feast of St. Lawrence, as part of the parish Forty Hours Devotion at St. Lawrence in Alexandria — the first liturgy in the traditional Roman Rite at the parish since Arlington's restrictions took effect in September 2022.
The National Summorum Pontificum Pilgrimages begin and end with the appropriate hours of the Divine Office and are followed by Sung Mass.

Supporting Traditional Seminarians & Candidates for Religious Life

In May 2023, we launched our first fundraiser to support a candidate for traditional religious life. Thanks to your generous donations, we were able to substantially ease the financial strain of discernment for a young woman who is now a postulant with the Sisters Adorers of the Royal Heart of Jesus Christ Sovereign Priest, the women religious' wing of the Institute of Christ the King. We are always looking for more opportunities to support traditional seminarians and prospective religious as they discern their vocations.
