THE NAME

The name MissionWake captures a multi-layered concept, acting both as a clarion call to awareness and a catalyst for action. Through real-life stories of trailblazers and unlikely heroes, the audience is drawn into the wake of creative and innovative ideas and solutions, awakening them to the profound, life-changing difference they can make in the lives of others.

Like the ripple effect of a ship’s wake, MissionWake seeks to spark new movements of compassion that radiate outward, transforming communities, cities, and lives. With this potential, MissionWake aims to ignite cultural and missional movements that offer an unyielding response to today’s societal challenges, equipping audiences to confront negative cultural trends with spiritual conviction, compassion, and decisive action.

THE MEDIA MISSIONARY

Behind the scenes of MissionWake lies the untold, enigmatic story of its creator, Mick Richards, whose early life as a struggling documentarian was plagued by inner conflicts, personal missteps, self-inflicted setbacks, and a relentless spiritual restlessness.

After launching an experimental TV series called Building a Difference, Richards discovered a new pathway into the world of local charity and volunteerism, despite facing a new set of personal challenges and production difficulties at every turn.

However, during an unplanned missions trip to Honduras, Richards experienced a profound internal shift when he came face to face with the stark realities of extreme poverty for the first time. This divine encounter sparked an unexpected spiritual awakening, compelling him to abandon his personal ambitions and take a blind leap of faith—to step into the shoes of a missionary and learn from those on the frontlines. This moment marked the beginning of an investigative, Spirit-led faith journey that propelled him to some of the world’s most challenging places, pushing him beyond his own personal borders.

The mission was to understand and document the challenges faced by struggling communities, explore the creative solutions provided by missionaries, and unravel the mystery of why gifted individuals would sacrifice their own dreams and desires to serve those in desperate need. In doing so, he sought to unlock the secrets behind the heart of missions, the spirit of missionaries, and the powerful movements they ignite.

As he began to view the world through the lens of his camera, a process of deep inner transformation unfolded, revealing long-sought answers to the problems that had always haunted him. To his surprise, he began to experience a radical change within himself.

Yet, with every divinely inspired story uncovered and each God-moment captured, a new burning question arose: could he ever convey these profound experiences to an audience in a way that would ignite the same authentic, transformative power and lasting impact he had witnessed?

THE HOLY FLOOD

MissionWake Volume 1: The Holy Flood is set in what has been called 'the world’s largest missions laboratory'—New York City. In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, which devastated Staten Island with a 15-foot wall of water, destroying 10,000 homes and leaving 75,000 residents homeless, a small coalition of churches came together to launch a strategic disaster relief effort. Each church adopted a specific neighborhood, fostering a strong sense of ownership, and their collective impact was extraordinary.

Local pastor David Beidel and other leaders reflected on the power of this unity, and asked the question, 'What if we operated like this as a way of life, rather than only as a response to a crisis? Could we bring a "holy flood" of community transformation that could overcome devastation in any city, at any time?' This question would later be answered in Beidel’s visionary book, Saturation.

Amidst a whirlwind of travels, Mick Richards unexpectedly found himself rerouted to New York City—a place he had never set foot in before. There, he crossed paths with Pastor David Beidel in what would soon prove to be a divine appointment that would change both of their lives forever. Captivated by Beidel’s bold vision of saturation, Richards felt an undeniable calling to remain in the city as a media missionary, temporarily putting his plans to return home on hold.

Beidel invited him to help develop and lead Jesus Week, a one-week outreach initiative that divinely positioned Richards at the heart of New York City’s missional efforts. This opportunity enabled him to quickly build trusted relationships with nonprofits and gain a front-row seat to some of the city’s most creative and transformative strategies.

THE MOVEMENT

With Beidel’s proven experience as an inner-city pastor and missional strategist, and Richards’ skills as a mobilizer, logistical organizer, and visual storyteller, they collaborated to craft an Acts 1:8 strategy—uniting churches and inspiring them to adopt their zip codes as mission fields.

They reimagined the biblical framework—Jerusalem as local neighborhoods, Judea as school partnerships, Samaria as the city’s overlooked and under-resourced areas, and the ends of the earth as an unprecedented opportunity presented by America’s growing immigrant crisis.

At the heart of Beidel’s 'Saturation' strategy is the belief that the church must go into the places where Jesus weeps, and that if God’s people would care for the most broken and abandoned first, He would give them the rest of their cities. Driven by this conviction, much of the church’s grassroots outreach efforts were focused on the 'Samarias' of the cities—the dark, painful, and desperate areas where the forgotten, the neglected, and the lonely live.

Behind the scenes, the overwhelming demands of an understaffed team and limited resources began to take its toll on the movement’s leaders, especially the media missionary at its heart. Like all great pursuits, his mission came at a steep personal cost. Richards faced relentless trials—physical exhaustion, emotional strain, spiritual warfare, and a devastating fire that ravaged everything he owned, including every hard drive containing irreplaceable footage from over a decade of mission work. The agonizing thought of losing those invaluable, divinely inspired moments left him with a deep, writhing ache in his soul. Yet, despite the ever-present temptation to abandon everything and return home, Richards stood convinced that quitting was not an option.

Through the relentless trials of ongoing 'holy fires' and the unstoppable momentum of a 'holy flood' sweeping across the Northeast, ordinary people were empowered to perform extraordinary acts of compassion. A genuine John 17 move of God began to rise—one that felt destined for the history books, overflowing with rich stories of overcoming conflict, divine appointments, and miraculous transformation—all moving together as one united force.
