My aunt Jan has been fiercely independent her entire life, living alone for most of it, states away from any family. Jan is having surgery in early February to fix a hiatal hernia which has collapsed one of her lungs, making it very difficult to work and perform daily activities. She will also have another surgery a few weeks later to fix an umbilical hernia.

She will be out of work for recovery for a while and she also has to travel to Denver for the first surgery, which is a 5½ hour drive or a one hour flight from her home. My mother, Barb, is flying out to Colorado from Wisconsin and meeting Jan in Denver for the first surgery. This is a major robotic surgery, but is done on an outpatient basis due to the concern for contracting infections during a recovery in the hospital. Recovery will require several nights stay in a nearby hotel to rule out post-surgery problems before Jan is able to travel home.

There will be dietary changes that Jan will need to make and her doctors want her to use quality protein shakes that are costly, as well as other supplements.

We are hoping to offset some of the travel costs and costs for Jan’s nutritional needs in the weeks to follow during her recovery.
