I knew a call from my sister at 12:49 am couldn’t be good news and I was right. She immediately told me she needed me to pray with her for Alexia (her daughter, age 17). I listened as my sister begged, “Please God, please God, protect Alexia’s brain” and ascertained between pleas that Alexia was in the middle of a CT scan. The ER doctors believed she had brain swelling from high blood sugar (Alexia was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 2021) as well as a concussion from passing out and hitting the doorframe. Based on CT results, Alexia was immediately transferred by ambulance from the county hospital to Vanderbilt Pediatric ICU.

When my dad and I arrived the next day, Alexia was in full diabetic ketoacidosis and had swelling on her brain. She didn’t know who we were, and even more painfully, did not know her mom for more than 54 hours. The doctors and nurses worked diligently and kindly to slowly bring Alexia’s body back into balance without causing more cranial pressure. To the glory of God, Alexia was able to return home with no detectable cognitive damage after a six-day hospital stay (mostly in ICU).

While we knew Alexia’s healing would take faith and trust, we also knew the financial provision for the hospital bill would as well. Alexia’s parents are self-employed (independent contractor) and do not have health insurance. They researched multiple plans when Alexia was diagnosed and every option cost over $1000 month even with high deductibles. On top of that, no plan would pay for the insulin, which is another expensive, but necessary, monthly expense. Even with changes in healthcare laws, insurance was simply not affordable. Sue and Joe (Alexia’s parents) have paid in full all medical bills thus far out of pocket. This one though is just too big to handle alone. All funds collected will go directly to ambulance expense, hospital bills and dental bills (her front teeth were knocked in during her fall). Any additional money collected will be put towards buying an insulin pump for Alexia, enabling her to more accurately control her blood sugar so this hopefully never happens again!
