I am standing as a Parliamentary candidate for the Social Democratic Party (SDP) for the constituency of North East Cambridgeshire at the forthcoming UK General Election. As someone of modest means (just about recovered from a double pulmonary embolism) standing for a small independent party, I’m hoping to establish a modest election ‘war-chest’ to pay for the deposit and leafleting etc.

The post-Brexit vote response from the UK neoliberal establishment, has vividly exposed the palpable contempt that the latter has for the concerns of the British people. This contempt must cease. Contrary to the media characterisation of an unwashed bigoted mass, the British people are some of the most tolerant, generous, civilised, and peaceable people on Earth. A polity cannot survive absent a sense of patriotism; unlike the ‘major’ parties, the SDP understands this axiom.

Given our (thus far unexploited) post-Brexit independence, the UK governing apparatus needs to put the British people at the centre of policy making, to include a radical (relatively speaking) social democratic agenda. As a patriotic, traditional, and economically left-leaning party, the SDP is ideally positioned to address these concerns. There are so many issues to address, but I think the four most urgent are: building social housing, nationalisation of energy and transport, reasonable levels of immigration, and opposition to radical gender ideology.
