The mission of Baskets and Beads Kenya is to teach entrepreneurial , leadership and community building skills to women in poverty in Kitale, Kenya. We sell their handcrafted Fair Trade products here in the US to give them an opportunity to earn a living wage and send their children to school.

Since COVID, our travels to Kenya have been limited. We were unable to go for for over a year and a half. We are planning a trip to Kenya in May-June 2022 and are raising funds to take the 30+ ladies we work with to another community to have a women's conference and teach those women how to build community and use their skills to sell their own handcrafted products. We will fund a medical clinic in a remote area to provide healthcare, medicine and treatment to those in an area that has no access to healthcare.

UPDATE: Due to political issues with the upcoming election, it's not safe to take the group on the retreat. There is a threat of attacks and unrest on a large group so for the safety of the ladies and ourselves we are adapting our trip to take day trips in the local area and add 1 more day to our conference in Mt Elgon. We are told that 100 women will attend. The first day will be inspiration and sharing and teaching about building community.

The second day will be teaching skills such as table banking and developing their business plan to get them on the path to earning income to be fully supporting by their own contributions.

The funds will be used as follows:

Mobile Medical Clinic - including transportation for medical staff and medicines and treatment for all who seek it in that area. This clinic will be open all day from morning until late afternoon. We will take supplies as needed.

Transportation to a rural mountain community for the conference, food, blankets and supplies for the families in that area and lunch for all attendees including children. Business plan establishment and table banking, resources, skills development and leadership board to be named to manage the group.

School fees, uniforms and supplies for up to a dozen kids and food packs for the ladies and their families and the 2 street kids we sponsor for complete care year round including school fees and room and board when not in school.

Rental of community room in the slum to meet and meeting room, food, supplies for activities

Day trips around the Kitale area to a museum, room at hotel with food for celebration tea.

Other miscellaneous expenses.

NOTE: My personal travel has been funded by my person funds. These funds will not be used to fund my travel to and from Kenya but will be used to help cover costs of food and lodging while there which are relatively inexpensive.
