Extend Life and Love: A Lifeline for Paul's Family

My name is Paul Rushton. In November 2023 I was diagnosed with uveal melanoma - an incurable cancer in my liver - and given perhaps a year to live.

It’s a shock to know you may soon have to leave those you love without your support and care, and I certainly am experiencing sadness over this.

The first thing that came to mind while still in the doctor’s office was, ‘I need to get things set up for Michelle (my wife, who is paraplegic) and Jed (my youngest son) so that they will be able to manage without me.’

But the truth is, I can’t do this alone and need your help.

On the drive home from the hospital I went over what that would mean: relocation, the purchase of better wheelchairs for Michelle, getting medical procedures sorted for me- in short, I needed to move as quickly as possible to ensure a smooth transition and a clear path ahead for them should the worse happen sooner rather than later.

Thanks to the incredible support of dear friends, we managed to move to a suitable rental property near family members within two months of the diagnosis. I am conscious however that living in a rented accommodation is not ideal for Michelle in the longer term, as in her condition, to have to move houses without support would be physically and emotionally extremely stressful for her.

For both of our peace of mind I want to be sure she’s in a permanent and stable situation before I pass on.

Also, to help her become more fully independent, Michelle needs a new manual wheelchair for indoors and a sturdy and reliable electric wheelchair for the outdoors.

Although the cancer I have is untreatable by conventional medical means, a medically supervised fasting retreat could give me a fighting chance of being around longer and in better health.

I'm reaching out for your support to ensure a smoother path for Michelle, Jed, and myself, and help us cover the costs for the health retreat, the wheelchairs, any ongoing financial challenges as I am unable to work, and to help contribute towards a longer-term stable home for Michelle.
