Help the Winter Family Rebuild After Hurricane Helene's Devastating Fire

My name is Faith Cotto, daughter of Nancy Cotto and Chris Winter. Our family, like many in Shore Acres, prepared for Hurricane Helene’s expected 5-8 ft storm surge. We spent days lifting furniture, barricading doors, and securing our most precious belongings, thinking we were ready for the water. But what we never expected was fire.

In the early morning hours, while staying at a hotel after evacuating, we received frantic calls and messages—our house, despite having no power, had caught fire. We rushed to get there, but floodwaters made the streets impassable. We could only watch from a distance, helpless, as our home burned. Dozens of neighbors called the fire department, but they were delayed by 5 hours, and by the time they arrived, our home was gone.

Our family is left with nothing. While this storm has been devastating for everyone in our community, it has been completely shattering for my parents. We’ve always tried to help others in need, and now I’m asking for help in return.

Throughout the storm prep, we helped neighbors wherever we could, and that’s something that’s always been important to us. Whatever is given to us during this time, we promise to pay it forward when we’re back on our feet.
