Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder feature film

Coming of Age Feature Film

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is the root cause of many of the world's leading mental illness diagnoses. FASD is far more prevalent than Autism Spectrum Disorder, yet few are familiar with the condition and its 400+ comorbidities. We aim to bring awareness to FASD through one of the most influential means in the world: cinema.

FASD is entirely preventable, and we believe projects like Embracing Zak are integral to the diminishing of its prevalence. We also believe in loving those afflicted with the condition caused by exposure to alcohol in the womb.

This is a relatable story of faith and community. It’s an underdog triumphing over adversity. A group of outcasts making a meaningful impact. A resounding victory for the underrepresented.

Inspired by cinematic classics like The Breakfast Club, Rudy, and Silver Linings Playbook, Embracing Zak pledges to deliver a story that is both heartfelt and humorous featuring memorable characters sure to capture your affection.

Who's making Embracing Zak?

Producer Justen Overlander helped the global phenom series The Chosen get off the ground and was a producer on two successful theatrical releases in 2023, The Shift and I Can. He's driven to tell stories that bring light to the world, especially those that represent marginalized populations.

Executive Producer Joel Sheagren and his wife adopted two children from birth, knowing there had been alcohol exposure during the pregnancies but unaware of its full impact. It took 14 years and several misdiagnoses before their son was correctly diagnosed with FASD. Joel has made it his life's mission to educate the world on the effects of FASD. Currently co-authoring a book with renowned FASD speaker and advocate, Carl Young, Joel speaks at national FASD events and guests on FASD-centric podcasts and blogs.

Where will your donation go?

Embracing Zak is in development. Based on renowned FASD-advocate Jodee Kulp's novel to be published Q3 of 2024, the screenplay is complete and ready to shoot. All donations will go directly to the development fund to cover legal fees, accountant services, location scouting/securing, expanding the film team, and other necessary costs leading up to pre-production of the feature film.

Is $100,000 the budget for the film?

No, the budget will be significantly higher in order to secure the highest production value possible and utilize the talents of recognizable professional actors.

Where will the rest of the production budget come from?

We are in talks with private investors. But before accepting investments, a number of infrastructure costs need to be covered. That's why your donation is vital to getting this important project to the next step.
