Update on David- 1/26/24'

It has been 9 days since the injury, and he is in the same hospital with my family taking shifts being around the clock with him. They are happy with the medical staff that treats him.

He is undergoing daily treatments under full anesthesia to remove remaining shrapnel from his legs and more repairs to the torn artery and muscles. There also seem to be some issues to take care of with his hearing and eye as well. The eyes have edema now, and it seems he burst his eardrum, so even though the hearing is ok, multiple noises or when more than one person speaking at a time is very disorienting and irritating to him.

There's also ofcourse, depression over the loss of his friends in the days prior to injury and recurring awful nightmares/hallucinations especially when in fever. Some nights are better than others.

The treatments are done in the mornings, and he spends the rest for the day recovering, then starts to feel better in the evenings. His appetite is very poor, barely eating anything but sometimes gets cravings for protein, so they've been trying to feed him homemade meat cutlets, fish, and shawarma.

Some days David has fever and sharp pains, there is always a scare of infection, but then the fever breaks and painkillers kick in and he feels energized- which gives him the boost- to get himself all by himself 🫣😲💪 to transfer from the hospital bed, to the wheelchair and back, using upper body strength, being able to lightly step on the less injured leg and sheer determination to go outside for a break from the confines of the hospital room. Yesterday was the first time he was able to make it to the the restroom+ shower on his own, and was finally bathed since the injury happened. Up until now he was only cleaned with wet wipes, but the sand and dirt from crawling around while injuries was still all over, irritating him. What a relief David was able to clean off now.

Basically, he switches around from rough fever, pain and mental stuggles, to being fully under anesthesia, to bursts of energy and ability to socialize.

My mom reports, he doesn't want a bunch of depressing pictures of him out there in his current vulernable state, so we will respect that and post newer ones only when David feels he's up for it.

The road to recovery is very long but with love, support, good docs, prayer and motivation- he will walk again. Him and his fiancee have big plans for the future.

David's parents- my sister in law and my brother have had some weight off their shoulders with the prognosis for David eventual recovery, assistance on their homestead from neighbours and other care they receive from you here and in Israel which allows his mom to be by his side all the time (minus sleep breaks), and for my brother to only go to work part time and check in on the house and David's younger siblings, cared for by friends and neighbours now.
