Dallas Sheriff Jail Officer Whistleblower
My name is Officer Lewis and I worked at the Dallas County Jail. We have a severe staffing shortage where officers are having to work 3, 4, 5, and five 16 hour days a week. And work their regular shift. There is no plan in sight. I previously testified on the poor working conditions, filed a lawsuit, and organized informational rallies to bring attention to this labor crisis. We recently lost officers to overworking and the deadly work environment. It took us too long to bury one of the officers with no help from the County. Workers have no place to turn with these labor abuses. God has been using me to help take on this issue. Many workers fear to speak up because of retaliation and retribution. It is hard for workers to get time off and to get a vacation. Workers are threatened with write-ups and disciplinary actions if they are too tired to work the extra 16 hour shifts. A recent media story has shared how the Sheriff has spent $14.4 million on overtime this year which is $12 million more in overtime than last year. Workers are in tanks with up to 64 inmates where it is impossible to social distance. Workers and detained were harmed and there have been deaths. Injured workers are being denied benefits and workers that died have been denied benefits. I developed discoloration and heart failure from the hostile work environment, overworking and nothing being done. This has broken us.
