On Monday, April 7th, I watched my worst nightmare unfold. My sister Aly was rushed to the hospital by ambulance, struggling to breathe. In the ER, she was intubated—and then her heart stopped. For two agonizing minutes, she was gone… until by God’s mercy, they brought her back.

Aly had been off her thyroid medication for a month due to insurance issues. Her body went into “thyroid storm,” a rare and life-threatening condition. She was going into heart failure. Her lungs were filling with fluid. She was placed in a medically induced coma and later life-flighted to Abilene for tests they couldn’t perform in Midland.

For days, we waited and prayed. She finally woke up on April 14th and was able to breathe on her own again—but she’s still in critical care. She remains bedridden, starting the long road of physical and speech therapy. She’ll need weeks of rehab to even stand and walk again. In the months ahead, she’ll also need thyroid surgery and lifelong treatment.

Aly is a loving wife and mother of two beautiful kids. This has turned their world upside down. The medical expenses—hospital stays, rehab, surgery, travel—are more than they can bear alone.
