Hello friends, and brothers and sisters in Christ!  We are excited to be returning to Uganda in 2020 to resume our service with the Watoto Child Care Ministry to orphan children.  We plan to serve at Watoto Suubi Village near Kampala for a five-month period beginning in May.

Our time with Watoto in Uganda this past year was so fulfilling and heartwarming that our lives will never be the same.  We have fallen in love with the people and culture of Uganda.  We are convinced that God has called us to a continuing ministry in Uganda to share the love of Jesus with these precious people.

The purpose of Watoto is to rescue children who have been orphaned because of the ravages of disease, poverty, strife, or abandonment.  The mission of Watoto is to rebuild the lives of these children in a holistic Christian environment, and to raise them to be the future Christian leaders of Uganda.

Suubi Village is a self-contained community of about 1400 children, with its own school system, church, medical clinic, and other supports.  The children live in group homes with a housemother who is usually a widow.  We were privileged to live alongside the moms and children in the village, and it was an absolutely remarkable experience sharing life with them.

During our service at Suubi, Wendy taught in children's church and ministered to the mothers.  This included teaching new cooking skills and recipes to the moms and children.  Joe worked with the pastoral and discipleship department to provide Biblical character education and mentoring programs to youth and young adults.

We are excited to return to Suubi to renew these meaningful relationships.  It is such a joy to share the Word of God and the compassion of Christ with these amazing young people--to help them discover their unique dignity and purpose as children of God.

We are inviting you to assist us in covering the costs of our latest mission trip.  Expenses include our lodging and meals in the village, international airfare, local transportation, and travel health insurance.  We are so grateful to those who made a financial sacrifice for us to serve with Watoto in 2019, and we are grateful for any donations you can provide to enable us to return to this magnificent misson field in the Pearl of Africa.

You can make an online donation through this website.  If you prefer to support us by mailing a check, you can do so by sending it to us made out to us at this address:  Joe and Wendy Ortwerth, 1018 Treeshade Dr., St. Peters, MO  63376  (Please note that donations are not tax-deductible.  Any funds raised in excess of our goal will be used for future mission trips to Uganda.)

UPDATES

Update #2
August 18, 2020
facebook twitter

The nation of Uganda remains under major lockdown with the airport still closed and the nation's borders sealed for the most part to contain the spread of the coronavirus.

We are grateful to our many friends who have helped us reach our fundraising goal to enable us to return to our service with Watoto at Suubi Village.

As soon as international air travel resumes and the airport is reopened, we are prepared and equipped to rejoin the Watoto children and family that we have grown to love so deeply.

Thanks for your prayers and parternship in this ministry effort to share the love of Jesus with the most precious people on the planet.

Gratefully,

Joe and Wendy Ortwerth

Update #1
March 16, 2020

With the global spread of the coronavirus, it is clear that our return to Watoto Suubi Village is going to be delayed.  Travel into Uganda from the US and from Europe is being curtailed.  We are hopeful that the outbreak will diminish sooner than later so we can resume our ministry to the precious children and people of Uganda.  As soon as travel restrictions are lifted and God releases us to go, we are so eager to rejoin our dear friends in East Africa.  All funds raised are being reserved exclusively for our missionary expenses in Uganda and will remain segregated for that purpose until the time comes for the resumption of our service in East Africa.
