On the 12th of November The Nicavangelists will begin their final bootcamp and outreach tour for 2021. We’ve saved the BEST FOR LAST, we’ll be travelling to San Juan del Sur in the southwest of Nicaragua to share our hope in God, Nica culture and wild talents.
Located by the Pacific Ocean, San Juan del Sur is popular amongst surfers, hippies, backpackers, missionaries, Westerners seeking to live off the grid, and is a major vacation center for many Nicaraguan families and foreign tourists.
Tourism has boomed over the past couple of decades, however prior to that San Juan del Sur was primarily a port for shipping and a fishing base. As tourists flocked to the area, the fishing industry also boomed.
A statue of the Christ of the Mercy sits above the town and is one of the tallest Jesus statues in the world.
Over several seasons (2010, 2011, 2014, 2015), many Survivor episodes were filmed in Nicaragua, the closest town to the shooting locations was San Juan del Sur.
In recent years, the World Surfing Championships have also been located close to San Juan del Sur, and these two sets of activities have propelled the town to international prominence.
San Juan del Sur has suffered greatly over the years. In 1984, US backed forces engaged in armed conflict in San Juan del Sur.
In 1992 a tsunami struck San Juan del Sur, destroying 60% of homes and displacing 800 residents.
However, potentially the most devastating impact on San Juan del Sur has been the decline of tourism in the town, caused by the recent socio-political crisis and COVID pandemic. Each has significantly hurt the tourism sector, which is now San Juan del Sur’s main industry.
The Nicavangelists San Juan del Sur Outreach tour and bootcamp will be 3 days. We are taking 60 youths and mums (The investment is just $10 per child).
Please pray for us as we share our hope, culture and talent in San Juan del Sur, a city suffering in the wake of its economic downturn. “If we want a love message to be heard, it has got to be sent out. To keep a lamp burning, we have to keep putting oil in it.” – Mother Teresa
