Tumaini Children’s Ministry

History
In 2012, Rachel (my daughter) and I traveled to Arusha, Tanzania. Our mission for the trip was to help teach teenage boys (all soccer players) become soccer referees.  This trip was amazing, we were introduced to a new culture and to lifestyles and living conditions that one would have to experience to even begin to understand.  The trip changed my daughter’s life, and set her onto the path she now travels.  Her goal became to help people in developing nations, after a few years of strategizing she decided becoming a nurse would be the best way to achieve her goal.  She will graduate with her nursing degree in May 2021.  (Note, the proud father).

What I did not realize was the change it made in my life.  While in Tanzania I met a young man and his wife, Geoffrey and Beatrice, (Geoff is Kenyan and Beatrice is Masai from Tanzania).  Geoff was one of the soccer coaches for the boys we taught, but that was just a side ministry. His main focus was the Tumaini house.  Geoff and I spoke a few times, I found him interesting and intriguing.  These conversations were the beginning of great friendship.

However, it wasn’t until 2019 that I reached out to Geoff again.  Diana (my wife) and I were traveling to Italy (our first international trip together) to visit our son who is in the US Army.   (Of course, the patriotic thing to do is visit your children when they are serving our country, even if it happens to be at one of the most historic and beautiful countries in the world….right?)  Since we were already on the other side of the world, I messaged Geoff and asked him if we could come and visit.  So, in February 2020 we found ourselves staying at the Tumaini House.

Diana and I spent nearly 2 weeks with Geoffrey and Beatrice learning about the Tumaini Children’s Ministry.  Tumaini’s mission is to seek out the poorest children and help them get into or stay in school, meeting their basic needs (food and shelter), sometimes living at the Tumaini house, sometimes with relatives. At present they are serving 78 children.

I am impressed with how they stay with these children all the way through their education.  In 2012 while I was watching a soccer game in Arusha, I had a very interesting conversation with a 10 year-old girl, Sarah.  Sarah was very intelligent and comfortable talking with an adult, who was obviously from another country, in English, which was not her native language, Kiswahili. At that time, I didn’t know that she was a part of the Tumaini house.  When I arrived in Arusha, in 2020 I asked Geoff about Sarah, he informed me that she just finished her secondary school with very good grades and is continuing her education working to become a doctor.  She is still very involved at the Tumaini house, she is a leader and through the Tumaini Children’s ministry her school is being paid for by sponsors.

Our Campaign
So, what about our campaign.  The Tumaini Children’s ministry has several people who sponsor children to go to school, (school is not free in Tanzania).  Although the sponsors pay for the children’s school fees, there are still incidental things that come up.  A delightful young boy, Lucas, needed to have eye surgery, all of the students need to buy school uniforms and shoes, they are growing.  This year (you know 2020) they had to deal with a pandemic.  Geoff and the Tumaini staff delivered food to the families of the students at the height of Covid there, and about 25% of those families had not eaten for a few days before the food was delivered.  So, to pay for these incidentals, the ministry is trying to launch some animal projects, goats, chickens and pigs to raise and sell to cover all of the incidentals that the sponsor’s donations are not covering.

Our Goal of $2000 is to create an infrastructure to make at least one of these animal projects profitable.  Not only will a successful project create funds for the extra incidentals the Tumaini Children’s Ministry need but also will create jobs administrating the project.

100% of the money donated to this campaign will go to launch or expand these projects.  Diana & I have already purchased our tickets to travel to Arusha in January to spend another two weeks with Geoff and Beatrice to encourage and help them and spend some time with the children we sponsor.  We want to help them get a strong start on expanding one of these projects while we are there.

We will be bringing your donation, transferred to us through GiveSendGo with us when we travel.  If you are unable to send your donation before we leave we are able to wire Geoff & Beatrice the funds.

We are asking you to pray for the Tumaini Children’s Ministry and if God leads, to give generously.

Thank You
Kevin & Diana
