Chicago’s Gang History wrote an article about Greater Englewood and here is what they reported about Englewood in a nutshell (https://chicagoganghistory.com/neighborhood/Englewood/):

"This neighborhood is still one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in Chicago and has had a reputation of that for many years.  ...Englewood has been considered one of the top 5 most violent and dangerous neighborhood for several years and has often achieved the number 1 spot many times.

Englewood is indeed the most blighted neighborhood in the city of Chicago. The landscape of Englewood is almost majority vacant land as old run down buildings were long ago torn down and nothing was built in place.

On every block in Englewood there are several abandoned homes and vacant lots and on some blocks there is some times up to ten abandoned homes in a row. Englewood is the poorest neighborhood in Chicago and the most dangerous..."

In addition, a WBEZ article titled Englewood, Past and Present, stated the following about  Englewood (https://www.wbez.org/stories/Englewood-past-and-present/a434694c-8793-492e-a713-5882faf4c5da):

"Englewood continued going downhill. The crime rate became one of the highest in the country. More major institutions left. Homes were abandoned... leaving whole blocks empty. By 2000 the population had dwindled to just 40,000. Englewood was looking a lot like–well, a lot like Detroit."

Hello ladies and gentlemen!

My name is Shamica Wilson, and I am the organizer of The Hood Take Over:  Greater Englewood Clean Up and Beautify Project.  First let me tell you a little bit about myself.  I am a native of Greater Englewood.  I was born and raised in Greater Englewood and I know first-hand about the ongoing decades of blight, abandoned buildings, crime, empty lots, and poverty in the Greater Englewood communities!  My family and I were extremely poor and only by the grace of God we were able to survive all those years living poor in Greater Englewood!  (God is good!)

In the midst of a pandemic, Greater Englewood has continued to experience its own pandemic of continuous blight, crime and economic disparities.  After hearing a great deal of bad news coming out of Greater Englewood over this past summer, I began to pray to God on what I should do to help my native community.  Soon after praying, I felt a desire to organize a Prayer Caravan around the boarders of Greater Englewood Chicago.  In July 2020, I completed this nearly- 8 hour prayer caravan around Greater Englewood almost completely by myself with the exception of a few men and women who came to pray with me towards the end of my prayer caravan, but had to leave soon after.  Once more, I was left alone to complete this prayer caravan by myself.  With God's grace and mercy, I completed this prayer caravan mission around Greater Englewood within 8 hours or so!   While praying, I constantly asked God to send help, send resources and send economic development from within and without Greater Englewood.

After completing the prayer caravan around the boarders of Greater Englewood, I never thought that I would feel such a compassion for Greater Englewood like I have now. God has made me feel so compassionate concerning the residents of Greater Englewood.  I can not explain to you how I am feeling, but I know it has something to do with the prayer caravan I did earlier this Summer in July 2020!

Now, I feel led by God to continue the good work in Greater Englewood.  This is why I am currently organizing The Hood Take Over:  Greater Englewood Clean Up and Beautify Project on Saturday, September 26th, Sunday, September 27th and Monday, September 28th from 8 am to 3 pm DAILY!  My goal is to clean up and beautify 21 blocks, of one of the most vibrant main streets in Greater Englewood!  That street is called Racine Avenue!

This will be my second week of organizing this Greater Englewood clean up and beautify project on Racine Avenue.  I started this project on September 12th through September 14th, 2020.  During those 3 days, I didn't have enough volunteers and proper supplies to effectively clean up and beautify all 21 blocks of Racine Avenue.  We only were able to complete 7 and 1/2 blocks and we now have 13 and 1/2 more blocks to complete!

After making it through all three days- the first time around, I have discovered that this Racine Avenue corridor- for the most part, has been neglected for several years!  We've discovered and properly discarded work saws, knives, and smelly- filthy garbage, plastics, alcohol bottles, wood, metals and more, in just 3 days worth of work- working 7 hours straight!  Unfortunately, we weren't able to thoroughly clean up and beautify certain vacant lots and vacant homes because it was either unsafe to do so or we didn't have enough volunteers to clean up properly.  I am sadden about having to leave some of those vacant lots and vacant homes in such horrible unkept conditions!

I can not have this happen again for this second week of clean up and beautification on Racine Avenue!  With that said, I am in dire need of supplies and manpower to complete the goal of beautifying 21 blocks on Racine Avenue!

Here is a breakdown of supplies that I am requesting donations to purchase.  Items with * mark indicates the most important thing I need to effectively accomplish this 21 block goal on Racine Avenue.  (Prices are estimated based of a Google search.):

1.  *Large Trash bags-  $18 to $25
2.  *RENTAL-  Truck/Van (to easily and efficiently transport large and bulky supplies from block to block)-  $400 to $500  (4 day rental, Friday through Monday, returning Monday evening, including insurance for all 4 days.  There will be a Friday pick up because we will not have enough time to pick up rental on Saturday morning because we start @ 8 am sharp on Saturday, 9/26/20!)
3.  *Gas for Truck/ Van-  $40?  ($10 per day from Friday to Monday)
4.  *Wheelbarrow/ push cart/ wagon-  $80 to $250
5.  Rubber Tip Litter (Garbage) Grabbers-  $1 to $20
6.  Water bottles-  $4
7.  *Hand sanitizers-  $1 to $20
8.  *Face shields/ masks-  $5 to $30
9.  Goggles-  $2 and up
10.  *Push brooms-  $12 to $25
11.  *Shovels-  $25 to $30
12.  *Extra large dust pans-  $12 to $30
13.  Safety vests-  $5 and up
14.  *Cordless lawn mowers-  $150 to $500
15.  *Cordless hedge trimmers-  $55 to $150
16.  *Cordless weed trimmers-  $55 to $180
17.  *Cordless leaf blowers-  $60 to $260

As you can see, most of these items are expensive and they add up quickly!  For example, if I would just purchase 1 of each "most important" items on this list- only using the lowest estimated cost per item, the cost will be as following:

 *Large Trash bags-  $18 +  *RENTAL-  Truck/Van-  $400 +  *Gas for Truck/ Van-  $40 +   *Wheelbarrow/ push cart/ wagon-  $80 +  *Hand sanitizers-  $1 +  *Face shields/ masks-  $5 +  *Push brooms-  $12 +  *Shovels-  $25 +  *Extra large dust pans-  $12 +   *Cordless lawn mowers-  $150 +  *Cordless hedge trimmers-  $55 +   *Cordless weed trimmers-  $55 +  *Cordless leaf blowers-  $60 =  $913  (For only 13 items!)

Currently, I do not have $913 to purchase a minimum of just 13 items from this list!  Realistically, we would need more than 13 items from this list, because of the amount needed to properly clean and beautify Racine Avenue in Greater Englewood!  With that said, I have set the donation goal to only $1,000 because I am not trying to ask for too much money on this site.

Once we complete this major undertaking of cleaning and beautifying 21 blocks of Racine Avenue in Greater Englewood, Racine Avenue will be easier to maintain by periodic cleanup.

If you would prayerfully consider to contribute towards this expense it will be such a blessing to the residents of Greater Englewood!   A $10, $20, or more donation will help us complete this project in no time!

A cleaner neighborhood, will beautify the neighborhood, raise property values, and give residents a sense of self-respect, hope and encouragement!  Thank you for reading our plea for help!

God bless you all,

Shamica
