On July 18th 2016 we got a call from a detective in Hawaii with the worst news about my sister and her husband. The words "murder suicide" froze us in time. My heart still breaks replaying that moment and thinking about my neice, Pierce. She was 9 years old at the time. The flooded thoughts about if she’s ok, who she’s with, and knowing her world just turned upside down, now alone on an island.
My dad brought her home to Oklahoma a few weeks later. Nobody knew what would happen but we shared emergency guardianship. Eric and I felt a stirring in our hearts for her to stay with us. We began to pray. We were terrified. We felt too young, inexperienced with raising an older child with trama, and trembling at the thought of what this decision could do to our family. Then the bigger question became- What would happen to her if we don’t?
Reading through my journal, I saw a note that I made one month prior to this decision. It said "Sometimes the most important lessons learned are not on the mountain tops, but down in the valleys." He was already preparing us. A reminder to step out of fear and into his Plan.
God laid the path for her to join our family. Through the last 4 years we’ve learned that GOD DOESN’T CALL YOU TO SOMETHING HE DOESN’T EQUIP YOU FOR. We value community. So many people have been an integral part of her healing process and this season of growth. Every devotional, sermon series, and small group seemed to speak straight to us in our time of need. We did hard things together. We fought through issues together. We have cried ourselves to sleep, and wanted to throw in the towel. Every time- God picked us back up and we carried on, together. If you’ve ever watched the movie “Instant Family”- Oh man, we laughed and cried through the entire movie because it was like watching ourselves on the screen. We are still working through the trama, but we are able to look back and see God’s hand all over the path that he has walked us through and we know He will see it to completion.
Adoption is our next step on this journey and Pierce believes it would make her feel 100% a part of our family. We already call her ours so we’re happy to put it on paper. It has been a long process and we were surprised at the monetary costs due in a short time span. We are still paying court and lawyer fees from guardianship cases over the last several years. My pride told me not to ask or accept help, and then I was prompted “If God has clearly led your family to adopt, He may clearly lead you to humble yourself and ask for help.” We are thankful for Sarah offering to start this page. Thank you all for your continuous love, support, and prayers. It actually does take a village. Thank you for being a part of that. We can’t wait to see what amazing things God has in store for this sweet girl.

Sincerely,
The Bruce Family
