At the 20 week ultrasound for the fourth Wiedeman boy, multiple abnormalities were observed in the baby's brain, heart, lips, kidneys, and feet. After genetic testing, he was diagnosed with trisomy 9 partial, a rare chromosomal syndrome in which a portion of the 9th chromosome appears three times (trisomy) rather than twice in cells of the body. Children with trisomy 9p are affected by delays in reaching developmental milestones including crawling or walking (developmental delays), growth deficiency, and distinctive malformations of the skull and facial (craniofacial) region. As children grow older, intellectual disability may become apparent.

At 4:37 pm on August 12, 2020, Oaks Edward Wiedeman was born weighing 5 pounds, 10 ounces and 17.5 inches long. He was moved to the NICU where he continues to undergo testing and procedures to get a clearer pictures of his true condition. They are at an excellent hospital where specialists are working with John and Krista to determine the best path forward on many health concerns. We are praising God for daily victories including his ability to breathe on his own, maintain his body temperature, tolerate feeds and improvements with initial steps to correct the dislocation of both hips.

Krista and John have been blessed to be able to stay in the Ronald McDonald house but children are currently not allowed to be there due to the pandemic. The hospital is three hours from home, therefore, motel accomodations are required for weekend trips to bring Oaks' older brothers to see their parents.  It is unclear how long the family will be separated.

There are ongoing expenses associated with travel and maintaining households in two different locations as well as the ongoing medical expenses along the journey. Donations are greatly appreciated for this wonderful family to help lessen the financial burden so they can focus on Oaks.

**Update**
Oaks Edward Wiedeman went home to be with Jesus on September 5th, 2020. He was born on August 12th, 2020 in Denver, Colorado. He spent 20 days in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children, where he was provided exceptional care and love. He was a strong fighter, consistently exceeding medical expectations and timelines.  He worked so hard to get out of the NICU so he could go home. During his few days at home, he was surrounded by love. He was welcomed by his brothers, family, and friends who loved him fiercely and were so proud of him. (Continue reading in update #4)

During his short life Oaks accomplished much and showed the importance of living one day at a time.  He taught us that children with disabilities are unique but so easily loved. Oaks displayed Gods’ glory and He worked miracles through Oaks that were tangible evidence of His goodness and faithfulness. Oaks taught us that life is fragile and precious but even in the midst of difficulties, there can be joy.

Oaks came home with an uncertain future, but his home in Heaven is secure. Death claimed his body which was so affected by his genetic condition, but it cannot touch his whole, healed, and restored Heavenly body.  Even though we are heartbroken that Oaks isn’t with us on Earth, God is still a good father. Oaks’ life has purpose, a planting of the Lord for the display of His splendor (Isaiah 61:3). Many were and continue to be impacted and drawn closer to the Lord through his story. We look forward to the day when we can stand together with Jesus!

Oaks was preceded in death by great grandparents and his aunt Meagan Wiedeman.

Oaks is survived by his parents, John and Krista (McKeone) Wiedeman, brothers Benson, Maddox, and Taysom, grandparents Dave and Sherri Wiedeman and Kert and Lorre McKeone, uncle and aunt Jordan and Kara Cudney and cousins Hadlee and Henley Cudney, and great grandmother Betty Wiedeman and many other loving family members.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Thursday, September 10, 2020.

Update #3

Oaks got to come HOME and we couldn’t be more grateful!  He is absolutely adored by his older brothers and has been passed around more times already than we can count!

This morning, as we were thinking about the excitement of returning home and the reunion with our boys, I couldn’t help but think...if we are this excited to return “home” with all the unknowns and a certain challenging road ahead, imagine how exciting heaven must be!  We are more thankful now than ever before for the finished, redemptive work of Jesus on the cross.  In that, and ONLY that, do we have hope for eternity—physical and spiritual perfection!  We wait with anticipation for our heavenly home, but I must say, today’s homecoming was one of the absolute sweetest days of my life.

If we’re completely honest, there were days when we weren’t sure we were going to come back home with a baby, days where we didn’t know what was going to happen, or how we would deal with what we were hearing. But, God has entered into our story in such an amazing way with Oaks, and we couldn’t be more in love with our new son. And now, our prayer is that we are able to stay within the moment and take one day at a time. We truly believe God has big things planned for Oaks, and we are amazed at the work He has already done in Oaks’ young life!

To all who have prayed for us and supported us, thank you so much. Words cannot express our gratitude, and we are completely honest when we say your support has carried us through some of our toughest days!  We continue to covet your prayers for Oaks and our family as a whole, as there will be significant adjustments to our “normal.”  However, our prayer of coming home with Oaks was answered, and we are beyond grateful to be at home together, right where we all need to be.

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
‭‭John‬ ‭16:33‬ ‭

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭8:28‬

Update #2

From John: Oaks continues to make great strides this week!  He had his breathing tube removed this morning and got his first tiny meal in his g-tube, which went well. He has also been on NO oxygen this morning, which means we may not even need to take oxygen home with us!  For the first time, he is without any tubes on his face!  As long as he recovers well from surgery and takes increased volumes of food well, we are looking at coming home early next week!  Our second son prayed last weekend that we would all be home together in “5 or 10 days,” and it looks like that may be a real possibility!  God has done and is continuing to do amazing things through Oaks and through your prayers.

“Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think.”
‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭3:20‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Update #1
August 21, 2020, 7:37 pm

From Krista: "So much can change in a day! God keeps reminding us that our little boy is an out-of-the-box kid, who is just full of surprises! Our latest surprise is a new diagnosis based on a genetic blood test. If you are keeping track that’s #3 when it comes to diagnoses. We’re hoping 3rd time is a charm! From what we’ve read this seems to be even more rare than the others, with only 65 cases documented in medical literature. ?

The latest diagnosis is tetrasomy 9p. Tetrasomy 9p is a very rare chromosomal disorder in which the short arm of the ninth chromosome (9p) appears four times (tetrasomy) rather than twice in all or some cells of the body. Individuals with a normal chromosomal make-up (karyotype) have two 9th chromosomes, both of which have a short arm ("9p") and a long arm ("9q"). However, in individuals with Chromosome 9, Tetrasomy 9p, four short arms (9ps) are present in cells rather than the normal two. In reading the Unique packet about his diagnosis, it seems to fit little Oaks well. I’ll attach the packet in the comments if you are curious to learn more.

In addition to his new diagnosis, the neurologist met with John regarding the results of Oaks’ MRI on his brain. John shared only the information I asked for answers to (the things I’d asked you all for prayers about) with me after the meeting. The biggest praise is that Oaks does not need a shunt at this time! This is such good news as shunts can cause all kinds of additional complications. We will continue to monitor his head size for hydrocephalus in the coming months, so please continue to keep this in your prayers as we move forward! There were findings of a Dandy Walker malformation and an agesis (complete or partial absence) of corpus callosum. While we were hoping for different results in those areas, we continue to be reminded of the way God has almost hidden knowledge of the brain from us as humans. It seems that this is one organ that God has protected as His own. It is something so mysterious and incredible, and also not fully known or understood by medicine. We’re trusting that God knows Oaks’ brain and will help it to reach his full potential no matter how the MRI reads!

We also met with Dr. Benson (Both Dr. and our Benson enjoyed that they shared a name) who is an experienced Orthopedic Surgeon. She suggested that Oaks has arthrogryprosis which means he has multiple joints with limited range of motion and stiffness. She thinks that the best course of treatment at this time is focused stretching in the areas of concern. My favorite thing she said was, “With this condition, the amount of effort you are willing to put in as his parents to work on and stretch his joints will have a direct impact on his future abilities.” It brought tears to my eyes to finally have something we can DO!"
